The scores provided below are from the 1860 edition of "The Sacred Harp". They give the first-time listener an idea of what shape-note music looks like, and something to follow along with as the music plays.
In the Sacred Harp, the main melody of each song is not found on the top line, but on the second line of three part pieces, and on the third line of four part pieces. Since many are accustomed to hearing the highest voice carrying the melody, Sacred Harp music may sound a little incomprehensible at first. But listen for the melody buried in there, sung by both men and women together, and you will appreciate the wonderful harmonies that arise in this unique American music.
